The Canberra Business Chamber’s latest Business Beat survey found more ACT businesses are less confident about the future, with customer demand weakening and costs rising. In the December quarter, 49 per cent of surveyed businesses did not meet sales targets, an increase of 10 percentage points from the previous quarter.
The December quarter result marks a clear deterioration from the September quarter. Nearly half the businesses fell short on sales, pointing to reduced customer spending as a direct factor in the numbers. The chamber identified higher operating costs and reduced customer demand as the main pressures behind the outcome.
Only 37 per cent of businesses reported feeling optimistic about the current business situation. That share fell from 43 per cent recorded in the September quarter. The drop in optimism aligns with the rise in missed sales targets and shows how current conditions are affecting sentiment across the ACT.
Looking ahead, 36 per cent of businesses expected growth over the next 12 months. About a quarter expected their business to shrink. These forward figures indicate that more firms see contraction as a realistic possibility than see expansion in the period covered by the survey.
The Canberra Business Chamber survey data provide a direct measure of how ACT businesses are performing against their own targets and how they assess their near-term outlook. Higher costs combined with softer demand have produced measurable declines in both current optimism and expected growth. Businesses can review the full quarterly results on the chamber’s research page to compare their own performance against the reported percentages and adjust planning accordingly.
