Braddon traders opened three new heated outdoor seating zones on Lonsdale Street last week, extending cafe hours until 9pm on weekdays to capture winter foot traffic that previously headed to Civic or the Kingston Foreshore.

The move reflects broader changes in how Canberrans use neighbourhood hubs during July, when daytime temperatures average 12 degrees and residents look for short drives rather than interstate travel. Local planning documents released in May show the ACT government prioritising mixed-use upgrades in established suburbs to reduce pressure on parking at major attractions like the National Arboretum.

Named venues anchor the shift

Two blocks from the new seating, the original 1920s shopfronts on Elouera Street now host a weekly Thursday night produce stall run by the Braddon Community Garden. A short walk north, the Duxton Hotel on Northbourne Avenue added a covered courtyard space that books out for private events on weekends. These sites sit within the same precinct that recorded 18 new small businesses opening between January and June this year.

ACT government data released in June shows Braddon foot traffic rose 27 percent in the three winter months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. Average spend at local cafes reached $26 per visit, up from $21 the previous winter.
