Winter gig rush hits Canberra venues as Civic and Kingston crowds pack shows this month

Smith's Alternative on Alinga Street opened its doors for the first night of its Winter Sound Series on 10 July with three local bands drawing more than 180 ticket holders through the venue before 9 pm.

The sudden spike follows the end of the federal budget session and the start of school holidays, giving residents in inner-north suburbs a cluster of mid-week options they have not seen since the same period last year.

Two neighbourhoods driving the chatter

Walk down Lonsdale Street in Civic after dark and the line outside The Phoenix stretches past the kebab shop most Thursdays. In Kingston, the recently reopened Courtyard at the Old Bus Depot has added a second stage for Friday sets, pulling in residents from Griffith and Narrabundah who previously travelled to Queanbeyan for similar bills.

Both sites sit inside the City of Canberra's designated entertainment precincts, where extended noise permits now run until 1 am on weekends.

Box-office figures released by the ACT Music Office show a 27 per cent rise in advance sales for July compared with the same fortnight in 2025, with average ticket prices holding at $38.

Smith's Alternative lists three more free-entry shows this week, while The Phoenix still has seats left for the 18 July double bill priced at $32. The Old Bus Depot releases its final block of $45 weekend passes on Tuesday morning through its website.
