Canberra on a Budget: How to Explore Australia's Capital for Less
Canberra is Australia's best city for budget cultural tourism, and it is not close. The national institutions — the National Museum of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library, the National Portrait Gallery, the Australian War Memorial, the Museum of Australian Democracy, Old Parliament House, the current Parliament House — are all either free or minimally priced, and together they constitute one of the finest concentrations of national cultural heritage available at zero cost anywhere in the world. A visitor to Canberra can spend three full days in world-class museums and galleries without paying a single admission fee, an experience simply unavailable in any other capital city in the developed world.
The ACTION bus network covers the entire city at Translink-integrated fares, with routes connecting all major institutional precincts, the CBD, and the inner suburbs. Cycling infrastructure in Canberra is the best of any Australian city — the Lake Burley Griffin shared path circuit of 35 kilometres is entirely flat, entirely scenic, and entirely free when covered by hired bicycle or brought from accommodation. The Canberra Arboretum is free. Mount Ainslie summit — the hill directly behind the War Memorial offering the definitive view of the Anzac Parade, Lake Burley Griffin, and Parliament House axis — is reachable by a 45-minute walk from the War Memorial car park at zero cost. The Namadgi National Park entry is free for day visitors on foot.
Budget eating in Canberra has improved enormously as the city's food culture has matured. Braddon's café and restaurant strip on Lonsdale Street offers specialty coffee and café food at prices well below Sydney or Melbourne equivalents. The Capital Region Farmers Market at Exhibition Park operates every Saturday morning — the largest and best farmers market in the ACT, with products from across the Canberra region at direct-from-producer prices. The Asian food courts of Civic and Belconnen offer some of Canberra's most affordable restaurant meals. Accommodation in Canberra is generally affordable by Australian standards, with serviced apartments in Barton, Fyshwick, and the Kingston Foreshore area providing excellent value for families and small groups visiting the national institutions.
