Canberra’s technology sector is quietly laying out its product roadmaps for the next 18 months, and the plans include autonomous vehicles, climate-adaptation hardware, and a new cancer-research spinout tied to one of the industry’s most recognisable names.
The push comes as the ACT government’s Innovation District expansion reaches its second phase, with three new co-working labs slated to open in Braddon by March 2027. Industry leaders say the timeline matters: federal R&D tax credits are due for review in November, and several startups have told the Canberra Business Chamber they are accelerating development to hit commercial pilots before any policy changes take effect.
That puts Canberra Mobility Labs on a potential collision course with Waymo, which has been running a mapping van in the ACT since April. The Alphabet-owned company has declined to confirm a commercial launch timeline for Canberra, but its local lobbyists have met with the Department of Infrastructure three times this year, according to the federal lobbyist register.
On the climate side, Fyshwick-based startup ArcticNode is finalising a prototype slushie-style cooling machine designed for heat-vulnerable outdoor workers. The device, which uses phase-change materials to keep drinks cold for up to eight hours without electricity, was tested during last month’s record heatwave in New South Wales. ArcticNode’s CEO told a July 9 industry roundtable that the company expects to open pre-orders for the unit in October, with first deliveries to construction sites and sports clubs before Christmas.
Cancer research and the Jobs connection
The most unexpected new entrant on Canberra’s tech roadmap is a biomedical-data startup backed by Emerson Collective’s health arm. Reed Jobs, the son of the late Apple co-founder, visited the ANU’s Canberra campus in late June to discuss a partnership that would apply machine learning to tumour genomics. Jobs, who has consistently emphasised his desire to focus on curing cancer rather than his family name, told a small gathering of researchers that the venture aims to recruit its first Canberra-based engineer by September 2026.
“The technology exists to cut drug-discovery timelines from years to months,” Jobs said during the visit, according to a participant who took notes. “But the data has to be clean, and Canberra’s biobank infrastructure is world-class.” The ANU’s John Curtin School of Medical Research has since posted a job listing for a “senior data engineer, oncology,” citing an industry partnership that matches the description of Jobs’ venture. Neither the university nor Jobs’ organisation has issued a formal announcement.
The ANU collaboration would give Canberra a foothold in the fast-growing AI-driven drug-discovery market, which analysts project will exceed $6 billion globally by 2029. Local venture-capital firm Canberra Innovation Network, which manages a $20 million seed fund, has told portfolio companies to expect an increased flow of health-tech deal flow in the second half of 2026.

For founders watching the roadmap unfold, the next key date is the ACT government’s August 14 innovation policy update, which is expected to clarify grant eligibility for hardware and autonomous-vehicle startups. The Canberra Business Chamber has also flagged a September delegation to the Web Summit in Lisbon, where several local firms plan to seek international distribution partners.
No one is predicting a sudden Silicon Valley-style explosion-Canberra’s tech scene remains small by global standards, with roughly 3,200 people employed directly in software and advanced manufacturing, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. But the products in the pipeline, from robotaxis to cooling vests to cancer-data platforms, suggest the city is building for the long haul. The real test will come when those prototypes meet regulation, customers, and the harsh Australian summer.”
