Canberra’s broadband network is racing to keep pace with a future that includes robotaxis, 5G-enabled manufacturing and AI-driven health diagnostics-but local tech leaders warn the city’s connectivity push carries as many risks as rewards.
The urgency spiked this week. Uber’s robotaxi lobbying effort puts it on a collision course with Waymo, as reported by TechCrunch on July 13. Both companies need low-latency, high-bandwidth networks to stream sensor data, run safety algorithms and handle remote operator overrides. Canberra, positioning itself as Australia’s testbed for autonomous mobility, can’t afford spotty coverage or data bottlenecks.
The local stakes: a network under pressure
Dickson, Belconnen and the growing Molonglo Valley are already seeing demand outstrip capacity during peak hours, according to community forums and anecdotal reports from IT workers. The ACT Government’s Digital Canberra initiative has earmarked $4 million for smart-city pilot projects, but industry insiders say private investment has been uneven.

None occurred in Canberra, but the pattern underscores the stakes.
The promise remains real. Faster, cheaper connectivity could help Canberra decarbonise its transport fleet, attract fintech companies away from Sydney and Melbourne, and allow the Australian National University to run its quantum computing experiments without data bottlenecks. But as the city bets on a connected future, the challenge is ensuring that speed doesn't come at the expense of fairness-or safety.
