Canberra Broadband Roadmap Outlines Next Products and Developments

Canberra network operators released a broadband roadmap on 11 July that schedules 10 Gbps residential tiers and new mesh routers for Belconnen and Dickson starting October 2026.

The timing aligns with rising data use from remote work and the local tech sector, where firms now report average household downloads exceeding 400 GB per month. Faster links will support cloud-based tools used by developers at the Canberra Innovation Centre in Civic and research teams at the Australian National University in Acton.

Local rollout sites

Initial upgrades target 12 000 premises along Northbourne Avenue in Dickson and around the Belconnen Town Centre. A second phase will reach Kingston and parts of Woden by March 2027, using existing NBN fibre conduits to cut installation times to under four weeks per street.

Equipment includes new Wi-Fi 7 mesh kits priced at $249 for a three-unit set, available through local retailers in the Canberra Centre from November. ACT government data shows current median fixed-line speeds at 98 Mbps across the city, with the new tiers expected to lift that figure above 800 Mbps in covered postcodes.

Next steps for residents

Households can register interest through the NBN Co portal or at ACT government service centres in Civic from 20 July. Early sign-ups lock in the introductory $109 monthly rate for the first 12 months. Technicians will begin pre-install surveys in Belconnen during the first week of August.
