Canberra Community Leagues and Facility Upgrades Drive Local Sports Activity

Urban Rec Canberra continues to run mixed-sport leagues including soccer, netball, touch football and dodgeball at venues such as Kaleen, Kambah and Weston Creek Indoor Sports. These sessions provide regular opportunities for social competition in weather-proof indoor settings.

Community and University Leagues

University-based options through the Australian National University and University of Canberra cover more than ten sports including football, netball and rugby league. Established clubs such as Ainslie Football Club and Vikings maintain community-grade competitions open to players of varying skill levels. School Sport ACT organises competitions and representative teams for high school students, while Canberra Grammar School requires students in Years 3-10 to take part in at least one core sport each year.

Facility Developments

The $15 million upgraded AIS Arena has reopened after a four-year closure with improved windows, seating, lighting and air-conditioning. The 2025-26 ACT Budget includes $938,000 for Belconnen Basketball Stadium planning, $1.2 million for Stromlo Forest Park community fields and $1.7 million for Phillip Oval upgrades. Construction of a $9.9 million Gungahlin tennis facility with ten full-sized courts and two Hot Shot courts is due for completion in September 2026. A partner has been announced for a new Olympic-standard ice sports facility in Tuggeranong with 2,000-seat capacity.

Participation and Funding

More than 200,000 local residents hold membership in at least one sports club. Funding for these activities typically comes from government grants, membership fees and sponsorships. Urban Rec Canberra also uses high school venues such as Dickson College, Merici College and Radford College for recreational leagues.
