Canberra College Sport Heats Up with Finals Season and New Facilities on the Horizon

Winter finals season is fast approaching for Canberra's college and school sport community, with students and social league players alike pushing hard on courts and fields across the city. From School Sport ACT's representative pathways to the social leagues run at venues like Dickson College and Radford College, the next few weeks represent a peak moment in the local sporting calendar.

Finals Heat Up in School and Social Leagues

School Sport ACT, the peak body for school sport delivery in the ACT, is overseeing the final stages of its winter competitions for high school students. The organisation manages state representative teams and organises competitions across multiple codes, giving Canberra's young athletes a structured path from schoolyard to representative honours. Meanwhile, Urban Rec Canberra, the city's primary community social sports league, founded in 2017 and now operating for over a decade, is running its mixed-sport leagues in soccer, netball, touch football, and dodgeball through the cooler months. Games take place at high school venues such as Dickson College, Merici College, and Radford College, providing weather-proof indoor options for recreational players who want to keep active through winter.

Canberra High School Athlete Development Program

Canberra High School continues to offer its Athlete Development Program (ADP) for students in Years 7 to 10, covering sports including athletics, basketball, netball, soccer, and volleyball. The program gives talented young athletes access to structured training and competition within the school environment, helping them prepare for higher-level representative sport. Students in Years 3 to 10 at Canberra Grammar School are required to represent the school in at least one core sport annually, with programs in cricket, football, rugby, basketball, netball, and tennis. The school's compulsory sport policy ensures broad participation across its student body, feeding into local club and representative pathways.

New Facilities and Upgrades on the Way

The $15 million upgraded AIS Arena has reopened after a four-year closure, featuring new windows, seating, lighting, and air-conditioning, providing a world-class indoor venue for basketball, netball, and other court sports that school and college athletes can aspire to play in. The 2025-26 ACT Budget allocated millions for sports facilities, including $938,000 for Belconnen Basketball Stadium planning toward a $30 million expansion, $1.2 million for Stromlo Forest Park community fields, and $1.7 million for Phillip Oval upgrades. Construction is also underway on a $9.9 million Gungahlin tennis facility, with 10 full-sized courts and two Hot Shot courts, expected to complete in September 2026. These investments signal strong government backing for grassroots and school sport infrastructure across Canberra's suburbs.
