Winter soccer returns to Canberra as the first games of the 2026 junior season begin on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The Australian Institute of Sport hosts junior pathway athletes throughout July 2026, running 10 camps across eight sports for 333 athletes aimed at developing talent ahead of Brisbane 2032.
Gungahlin Jets Juniors operates as a grassroots AFL club open to participants aged 5 and older. The club earned the 2024 Junior Club of the Year award from AFL Canberra and maintains boys', girls' and mixed teams into 2026. These teams provide regular training and match opportunities that connect families across the region.
Basketball ACT records 15,000 registered players in Canberra. The Canberra Eagles Basketball Program supports over 60 athletes aged 5 to 25 through high-performance training, cross-cultural education and initiatives that keep disadvantaged youth engaged in structured activities.
The AIS camps in July 2026 create direct connections between local clubs and higher-level opportunities. Clubs such as Gungahlin Jets Juniors and programs like Canberra Eagles supply the base participation that feeds into these camps, allowing athletes to progress while remaining anchored in their home communities.
Clubs continue their regular schedules after the July camps conclude, with winter soccer fixtures and ongoing basketball sessions providing consistent community contact points for families. Residents can check club websites and local sports association listings for current registration details and training times.
