The 2025-26 ACT Budget includes major investments for new playing fields and a pavilion in Taylor, plus the first stage of Stromlo District Playing Fields in Molonglo. These commitments arrive alongside multiple other facility projects that local clubs and school-based programs can use for training and competition.
Canberra clubs face ongoing demand for quality venues as participation in community leagues grows. Projects such as the Gungahlin tennis facility and the Belconnen Basketball Stadium expansion directly address indoor and outdoor shortfalls that have limited scheduling for groups like those run by Tennis ACT and Capital Football. The upgrades give clubs clearer pathways to book consistent space without repeated cancellations due to wear or overcrowding.
Construction has begun on a $9.9 million Gungahlin tennis facility with 10 full-sized courts, expected to finish in September 2026. Canberra's AIS Arena reopened in July 2026 after a $15 million upgrade, its biggest refurbishment in 43 years, featuring a new wall of windows. The ACT Government committed $37.5 million to expand Belconnen Basketball Stadium with three additional indoor courts and a 1,800-seat show court. A new 3,600-capacity ice sports facility named Canberra Arena is planned in Tuggeranong with two international-standard ice sheets and the first curling sheets in Australia. These sites sit in established suburbs where clubs already operate regular seasons.
School programs such as the Athlete Development Program at Canberra High School and community leagues offered by Urban Rec Canberra already draw hundreds of participants each season. The new fields in Taylor and Molonglo, together with the ice facility in Tuggeranong, extend the same logic of shared access to clubs that run weekly competitions from March to September. South Canberra Tuggeranong Athletics Club and University-based groups at UC Stars and ANU stand to gain additional options once the venues open.
Local organisations will now assess how the completed facilities align with their existing bookings. Clubs can contact ACT Government sport and recreation channels or venue managers to register interest ahead of the next season cycle.
