Canberra High School runs an Athlete Development Program that covers athletics along with basketball, AFL, futsal, netball, soccer and tennis for students in Years 7 to 10.
Applications for the 2025 cycle closed in Week 9 of 2025, with notifications issued during Term 1 2026. The school lists the program on its website as one route for students seeking structured support in those sports.
School Sport ACT coordinates trials and competitions for basketball and other codes across Canberra primary and secondary schools. The organisation acts as the peak body for school sport delivery in the ACT.
Canberra Grammar School requires all students in Years 3-10 to represent the school in at least one core sport each year, with offerings that include cricket, football, rugby, basketball, netball and triathlon. Coaching comes from both staff and external specialists.
High school gymnasiums in Canberra for Years 7-10 can be hired by community groups and can fit multiple basketball, netball, volleyball and futsal courts at once. The School Sport Australia Track & Field Championship for ACT students aged 10-12 took place in Canberra from 27 to 30 November 2025.
Canberra records the highest community sport participation rate in Australia, with 86 percent of residents taking part in sport or physical activity at least once a week. Urban Rec Canberra, founded in 2017, runs social seasons in several codes, though its leagues sit outside formal school programs.
Organisers note ongoing facility pressure in the ACT, where demand from high participation levels sometimes exceeds available venues. Students and schools continue to use existing programs such as the Athlete Development Program to prepare for events run by School Sport ACT and national bodies.
