Stromlo Forest Park will host the 2026 Capital Athletics Cross Country Championships on Sunday, July 19, drawing school teams from across the ACT to one of the capital's key outdoor venues.
High participation levels across Canberra place steady pressure on existing facilities, from school gymnasiums available for community hire to dedicated indoor centres in multiple suburbs. Organisers report that demand frequently exceeds available court space for basketball, netball and futsal, even as weekly sport engagement remains strong.
Canberra High School runs its Athlete Development Program for Years 7-10 students in athletics, basketball, AFL, futsal, netball, soccer and tennis, with applications for the 2025 cycle closing in Week 9 and notifications issued in Term 1, 2026. Canberra Grammar School requires all students in Years 3-10 to represent the school in at least one core sport each year, using its own fields and courts for cricket, football, rugby, basketball, netball and triathlon. High school gymnasiums across Canberra accommodate multiple courts simultaneously and are open for hire by external clubs and organisations. The School Sport Australia Track & Field Championship for ACT students aged 10-12 is set for 27-30 November 2025 in Canberra, while School Sport ACT coordinates regional trials and pathways for secondary students.
Urban Rec Canberra, founded in 2017, runs 10-week social seasons in soccer, touch football, netball, pickleball and dodgeball at venues that accept players of all skill levels. Kaleen Indoor Sports operates year-round leagues for netball, soccer, cricket and multi-sports at sites in Kaleen, Kambah and Weston Creek, with schedules unaffected by weather. Seasonal patterns see outdoor soccer running March-September and cricket October-March, while basketball and tennis continue throughout the year. Canberra records an 86 percent weekly participation rate in sport or physical activity, the highest in Australia, yet facility shortages mean some codes must turn players away.
School Sport ACT remains the peak body linking school programs to regional and national representative opportunities. Individuals seeking to join a team or hire space can contact Urban Rec Canberra directly or check availability at Kaleen Indoor Sports and local high school gymnasiums through their respective booking channels.
