Canberra Community League Heats Up: Local Clubs Battle for Finals Momentum

The race for Canberra’s amateur football finals has tightened after a split round that saw last year’s premiers fall by a single goal on Saturday afternoon at Kippax Oval.

Round 14 of the Canberra District Football League, played across Belconnen, Tuggeranong and the inner south, marked the unofficial start of the season’s final phase. With just four rounds remaining before the finals series, every result reshapes the ladder.

What happened on the field

Woden Valley FC snatched a 3-2 win over the defending premiers Queanbeyan City at Kippax Oval on Saturday. The result was Queanbeyan’s third loss of the season and tightened the top-four race in the men’s premier division. Earlier that afternoon, at Hawker’s AIS Athletics Track, Canberra City FC held a scoreless draw against ANU FC, each side leaving with points but little gain on the ladder.

In a women’s first-grade contest that drew the largest crowd of the day, league officials estimated more than 400 along the sideline, Belconnen United ran out comfortable 5-1 winners over Brindabella Blues at the AIS Track. Belconnen forward Chloe Sinclair scored three second-half goals and now leads the division with 11 for the season. The Women’s Football Records summer report had listed her as one of three players to watch in the ACT in 2026.

The round started Friday night at the South Canberra Athletics Field, where Gungahlin United FC won 2-1 against Tuggeranong United FC. The match featured a red card in the 76th minute to Tuggeranong defender Matthew Chen, a decision the home fans loudly disputed. The league’s match review panel is expected to announce any suspension by Wednesday.

Why it matters now

Canberra’s amateur league season typically runs from late March through early September. With the finals series slated for the last two weekends of August, points from the remaining four rounds carry outsized weight. Teams that finish in the top four qualify for finals. Right now, only six points separate second place from seventh in the men’s premier division. In the women’s first grade, an injury to Gungahlin’s starting goalkeeper in the 41st minute on Saturday has left the club without a confirmed replacement for next week’s match at Hawker.

League officials have already published the finals venues. Kippax Oval will host the women’s grand final on August 29, and the men’s division decider will be at the AIS Track on August 30, both kicking off at 3:30 pm.

Next week’s Round 15 slate includes Woden Valley v. Gungahlin United on Saturday July 19 at the AIS Track at 2:30 pm, and a Sunday feature match between Brindabella Blues and Queanbeyan City at Kippax Oval.
