Canberra residents have a full schedule of weekend events starting July 11, including markets and exhibitions at central venues that stay open through Sunday evening.
Winter draws more people indoors and outdoors in equal measure because temperatures drop below 10 degrees at night while daytime sun often lifts above 15. Locals who want to avoid crowds at popular spots benefit from planning routes around Lake Burley Griffin and the Parliamentary Triangle before midday traffic builds.
The National Gallery of Australia on King Edward Terrace opens its winter photography display at 10am with free entry for Australian Capital Territory residents who show proof of address. The display runs until 5pm and features works from the gallery’s own collection. A short walk away, the Old Bus Depot Markets at 21 Wentworth Avenue in Kingston open from 9am to 4pm with more than 70 stalls selling produce and crafts. Entry costs nothing though parking in the adjacent lots fills by 10.30am on most weekends.
Organisers at the Australian National Botanic Gardens on Clunies Ross Street report average Saturday attendance of 2,400 visitors during July, according to figures released last month. The gardens run guided walks at 11am and 2pm that cost $12 for adults.
Manuka Village hosts a pop-up winter produce market from 8am to 1pm along Flinders Way with stalls from local growers. The same neighbourhood offers meter parking at $3.60 per hour on Sundays. Residents planning to move between sites can use the Blue Rapid bus route that stops at both the National Gallery and the Botanic Gardens every 15 minutes from 9am.
Those heading out should check the ACT Government’s events page for any last-minute changes and carry a reusable coffee cup for stalls that offer discounts when customers bring their own. The weekend ends with free outdoor screenings at Commonwealth Park starting at 6pm on Sunday.
