Canberra runs on a calendar of seasons, and each one brings a signature event that the whole city plans around. Whether you live here or you are thinking of moving, knowing the rhythm of the year helps you make the most of the capital. Here is how the seasons unfold, and where to find official details before you go.

Spring: Floriade

Floriade is Canberra's best-known event and Australia's largest celebration of spring. Held at Commonwealth Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, it fills the gardens with more than one million blooms, alongside a marketplace, food stalls, workshops and live music. The 2026 festival runs from 12 September to 11 October, with the theme "Feast of Flowers" celebrating the meeting of nature, food and community.

Entry to the main festival is free and no registration is required, though some events within the program are ticketed. Gates generally open in the morning and close in the late afternoon. A few favourites return each year, including NightFest, when the park stays open after dark for illuminated gardens and entertainment, and Dogs' Day Out, a dog-friendly day usually held towards the end of the festival. Check the official Floriade website for the current program, hours and any ticketed sessions before you visit.

Late summer and autumn: Enlighten and the Balloon Spectacular

As summer turns to autumn, the Enlighten Festival lights up the city. Across roughly ten nights from late February into March, the major national institutions around the Parliamentary Triangle become canvases for large-scale projections, with after-dark openings, food, music and family events. The illuminations themselves are free to watch, with some exclusive ticketed experiences available.

The Canberra Balloon Spectacular follows in March. For around nine mornings, dozens of hot-air balloons inflate at dawn and drift across the city, with the launch site beside the lake and the national institutions. It is free to watch and best enjoyed early, so set an alarm and bring something warm for the cool morning air. Autumn also delivers the National Folk Festival over the Easter long weekend and the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Australian War Memorial on 25 April.

Winter: truffle season

Canberra does not hibernate in winter. The cold, frosty mornings that define the season are exactly what the region's prized black truffles need. The Canberra district is one of the few places outside Western Europe where these truffles are grown, and the harvest typically runs from June through August.

During truffle season, local restaurants and cafes build special menus around the harvest, and nearby farms offer truffle hunts with trained dogs, on-site dining and cooking classes. It has become one of the capital's signature winter drawcards, pairing naturally with the region's cool-climate wineries. Winter markets around the district give visitors a chance to meet growers and producers directly.

Summer: festivals and the show

Summer brings a busy run of events. Highlights typically include the National Multicultural Festival in the city centre, where food stalls and performances celebrate cultures from around the world, and the Royal Canberra Show, with animal competitions, rides and produce displays. These are warm-weather, outdoor occasions, so plan for sun and heat and check the organisers for the current year's dates.

Planning your year

  • Spring (September to October): Floriade at Commonwealth Park
  • Autumn (late February to April): Enlighten Festival, Canberra Balloon Spectacular, National Folk Festival, Anzac Day Dawn Service
  • Winter (June to August): truffle season, winter markets and cool-climate wineries
  • Summer (December to February): National Multicultural Festival, Royal Canberra Show

Dates shift slightly from year to year, and programs are released closer to each event. For the most reliable information, including timings, ticketing and accessibility, always confirm with the official event organisers and VisitCanberra before you make plans. With a little forward thinking, there is something worth turning up for in every season of the Canberra year.
