Canberra Startup Surge Reshapes Local Job and Talent Market

Canberra tech startups added 850 positions in the first half of 2026, with most roles filled by candidates relocating from Sydney and Melbourne.

The increase stems from federal contracts for digital tools and data services that opened after the Telstra outage exposed gaps in national infrastructure. Companies now compete directly with government agencies for the same pool of engineers and analysts, driving up salaries in software development by 18 percent since January.

Braddon and ANU programs draw fresh talent

Offices along Lonsdale Street in Braddon now host three new venture-backed firms that specialise in secure cloud platforms. The Australian National University’s Innovation Hub on North Road runs a six-month residency that has placed 42 graduates into paid roles at these companies since March. A second site at the Kingston Foreshore innovation precinct opened in May and already lists 15 open positions in product design.

Recruiters report that candidates with security clearances now receive multiple offers within a week. One firm on Elouera Street raised starting pay to $138,000 for mid-level developers to match offers from larger contractors in Russell.

Numbers point to sustained demand

ACT government data released on 3 July showed 2,140 active startup-related job listings in the territory, up from 1,310 at the same time last year. Median rent for a one-bedroom unit near Civic reached $2,150 a week in June, reflecting the influx of new arrivals. Local training providers at the Canberra Institute of Technology added two extra cohorts in cloud architecture this term to meet employer requests.

Workers seeking to enter the market should update LinkedIn profiles with specific clearance levels and register with the Startup Canberra network before the next intake round in August. Those already in government roles can attend the free skills workshops held every second Tuesday at the National Convention Centre to map internal experience onto private-sector requirements.
