Yarralumla, Canberra: Embassies, the Governor-General and the Lakeside Suburb

Yarralumla is one of Canberra's most prestigious and historically significant residential suburbs, home to Government House (the official residence of the Governor-General of Australia), numerous high commission and embassy buildings, and some of the capital's most valued lakeside residential properties. The suburb's long streets of mature trees — many planted as part of the original 1920s capital planning — give Yarralumla an established landscape character found nowhere else in the ACT. The Yarralumla Brickworks, a former industrial site on the suburb's eastern edge, is undergoing significant residential and commercial redevelopment as a significant new community space adjacent to Lake Burley Griffin. The Royal Australian Mint on Denison Street in adjacent Deakin is technically in a neighbouring suburb but forms part of the Yarralumla area's visitor appeal; public tours and the coin collection are available daily. The lake foreshore path through Yarralumla provides one of the most scenic cycling and walking routes in Canberra. Government House opens periodically for public garden events including the Open Day, typically held in spring.
