Tuggeranong, Canberra: The Southside District and What to Know
Tuggeranong is Canberra's major southern district, centred on the Tuggeranong Town Centre and the recreational Lake Tuggeranong at its heart. Established primarily in the 1970s-1980s with a large public housing component alongside private housing, Tuggeranong has a different socioeconomic character from the inner-north suburbs and has benefited from ongoing commercial investment. The Hyperdome shopping centre on Anketell Street is the district's commercial anchor, one of the ACT's larger retail centres. Lake Tuggeranong has a foreshore path, sports facilities and regular community events including the annual Tuggeranong Festival. The Tuggeranong Arts Centre on Reed Street North is a significant community arts venue running visual arts, performance and creative programs. The Namadgi National Park's northern border begins immediately west of Tuggeranong, providing extraordinary wilderness access — including the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve — within 30 minutes of the town centre. Calwell, Greenway and Conder on the outer edge of the district offer some of the ACT's most affordable family housing.
