NewActon, Canberra: The Inner-City Precinct of Arts, Dining and Apartments
NewActon is one of Canberra's most distinctive urban precincts, a mixed-use development in the inner city west of Civic that combines residential apartments, hotels, galleries, restaurants and public artwork in a cohesive architectural setting. The precinct sits adjacent to the Acton Peninsula on Lake Burley Griffin and is within walking distance of the Australian National University campus and the Civic CBD. The Nishi building is the precinct's centrepiece, a mixed-use complex housing the Ovolo Nishi hotel, the Palace Electric Cinema (Canberra's best independent arthouse cinema) and a range of cafes and restaurants. The Monster Kitchen and Bar in the Nishi building is one of Canberra's most acclaimed dining venues. The precinct has a strong public art presence with works by significant Australian artists integrated into the architecture. The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (Canberra) equivalent is represented through nearby Ainslie Arts Centre. Newcomen Street and Bunda Street connect the precinct to Civic, making it walkable from the main CBD. The Acton Waterfront adjacent to NewActon has walking paths along the lake edge and views toward the Parliamentary Triangle.
