Deakin, Canberra: Embassies, the Royal Australian Mint and the Inner-South Suburb
Deakin is a quiet, prestigious inner-south suburb that sits between Yarralumla and the Woden Valley corridor, housing a significant number of foreign diplomatic missions alongside substantial residential properties. The Royal Australian Mint on Denison Street is Deakin's most significant public attraction, producing the majority of Australia's circulating coinage and open for public tours that include a view of the coin production floor and access to the numismatic collection — free entry and a genuinely engaging experience for families and collectors. Several embassy and high commission buildings line the streets of Deakin, contributing to the suburb's ordered diplomatic character. The suburb's proximity to Woden Town Centre to the south and Kingston Foreshore to the east gives residents excellent access to both retail and lakeside dining amenity. Deakin's residential streets include a mix of Federation-style homes and later mid-century construction in a predominantly owner-occupied format. The Australian Sports Commission headquarters complex on Leverrier Crescent is a significant employer within the suburb.
