Reid, Canberra: Heritage Architecture, City Edge and Civic Proximity
Reid is one of Canberra's oldest and most architecturally significant residential suburbs, positioned immediately north of Civic on the inner-north ridge that runs from Ainslie to Black Mountain. The suburb contains some of the ACT's most intact collections of early Canberra government housing, with interwar-era brick cottages and semi-detached homes built for public servants in the 1920s-1940s that have been heritage-listed and are sought after for purchase. The former Hotel Acton (now operating as a boutique accommodation and events venue) on the suburb's western edge at Acton is one of the few original Canberra hotels still operating in an heritage-adapted form. Reid's elevated position above Civic gives it outstanding eastward views across the suburbs to the Brindabella and Tidbinbilla ranges that are particularly notable at sunrise. The suburb's connection to the Civic light rail terminus via walking routes and bus services makes it one of the most transit-accessible residential suburbs in the ACT. Several embassies and diplomatic missions operate from Reid's larger heritage buildings. The suburb's primary school, Reid Primary, is one of Canberra's oldest government schools still in operation.
