Phillip, Canberra: Woden Town Centre, Hospitals and the Southside Hub
Phillip is the commercial and civic heart of Woden Valley, Canberra's major southside district, and functions as the southside equivalent of Civic — anchoring a cluster of government services, retail, medical facilities and higher education in the Woden town centre precinct. The Canberra Hospital on Yamba Drive is the ACT's largest public hospital and the primary acute care facility for Canberra and the surrounding southeast NSW region. Westfield Woden on Melrose Drive is Canberra's second-largest shopping centre and the retail anchor for the entire southside. The Phillip commercial area includes significant ACT Government office accommodation and several federal agency headquarters. TAFE ACT's Woden campus on Launceston Street provides vocational education for the southside community. The suburb's light rail connection to the broader network is planned as a future stage that would link Woden to Civic via Commonwealth Avenue. The Woden Town Centre has undergone significant urban intensification over recent years with apartment developments above retail and commercial uses. The Canberra Theatre's main venue is in Civic, but the Woden community is served by local arts and community facilities within the Phillip precinct.
