Hawker, Canberra: Belconnen Northside Shopping, Schools and Family Suburbs
Hawker is a northside Belconnen district suburb best known for the Hawker shops and commercial precinct on Hawker Place, which serves as a significant local retail and services hub for the surrounding Belconnen suburbs of Weetangera, Page, Scullin and Holt. The Hawker shops precinct has a supermarket, medical centre, dental services, pharmacy and a range of convenience retail that make it more comprehensive than a typical suburban strip, functioning as a minor town centre for the northwest Belconnen area. Hawker College on Northbourne Avenue in adjacent Lyneham is not in Hawker itself but the suburb name has become associated with northside college-level education in the ACT's college system. The suburb's residential character is predominantly 1970s-1980s brick homes on good-sized blocks that are typical of the Belconnen district expansion era. Weetangera Pond and surrounding parkland near Hawker provides a pleasant local green space for the community. The suburb is well connected to Belconnen Town Centre and Bruce via Coulter Drive. First-home buyer activity in Hawker is strong given the value relative to inner suburbs.
