Civic, Canberra: The City Centre, Shopping and Eating in the CBD

Civic is Canberra's central business district and the commercial, cultural and transport hub of the capital. The City Walk pedestrian precinct runs through the heart of Civic and is the main retail spine, with Canberra Centre (the ACT's largest shopping centre) on Bunda Street anchoring the retail core. Garema Place is the open-air plaza at the heart of Civic and hosts markets, buskers and community events regularly. The Palace Cinema Civic on City Walk shows arthouse and mainstream films. The light rail terminus at Alinga Street connects Civic directly to Gungahlin in the north. Lonsdale Street in adjacent Braddon is within easy walking distance and is effectively part of the extended city centre dining scene. The Australian War Memorial, National Museum of Australia, National Library and National Gallery — while technically in other suburbs — are all within a 10-15 minute walk or short bus ride of Civic. Several of Canberra's best rooftop bars and cocktail venues are in the Civic hotel precinct on London Circuit and Akuna Street.
