Calwell, Canberra: Tuggeranong Southside Living and the Lanyon Valley
Calwell is a Tuggeranong district suburb on Canberra's southern fringe, positioned close to the Lanyon Valley and the ACT's southern rural areas, giving residents a sense of open space and rural proximity that is distinctive even within the Tuggeranong district. The Lanyon Homestead on Tharwa Drive, approximately 10-15 minutes drive south of Calwell, is one of the ACT's most significant historic properties, a 19th-century pastoral homestead and the site of the Nolan Gallery, which houses a permanent collection of Sidney Nolan's Ned Kelly series paintings in a purpose-built building on the historic estate. The homestead and gallery are operated by the ACT government and open to the public, making Lanyon one of the most rewarding day-trip destinations for Tuggeranong residents and visitors. Calwell's residential character is a mix of 1980s-1990s housing typical of the Tuggeranong expansion era, with a strong community focus around local schools and parks. The Calwell shops provide local convenience retail. Tuggeranong Town Centre is approximately 5 km to the north. The Murrumbidgee River Corridor's southern extension is accessible from the suburb for walking and cycling in natural landscape.
